A Trio of Tunes for Tuesday!

The weather has gotten nasty here over the past couple of days! High winds, accompanied by copious amounts of rain, make it clear that the seasonal change is in full swing. I’m happy that the work on the roof was done in time, and a small leak near the vent in the laundry room was finally tended to.

Time to do a bit of gaming! I have the music cranked up, a hot cup of coffee at hand, and a pleasant haze of smoke is hanging in the air. Allow me to share a bit of music, if you will – sit back and relax for a while!

Tuesday Tidbits…1 November 2016

It’s November…and NaNoWriMo is here! I’m participating this year (finally), so my blogging and gaming schedule will change a bit as I make a genuine effort to see this challenge through to completion. 50,000 words on a completely new novel in one month…that’s words, not just ‘characters’ as many are limited to in texts or Twitter feeds. I have a nice little support group and cheerleading squad with my family, friends, and a couple of my WordPress buddies – so, I figure that I’m as ready as I’ll ever be!

The image below shows the minimum number of words that should be written per day, in order to complete this challenge successfully, so I’m determined to see it through. I’m looking forward to this…it will be fun and frustrating at the same time!

I will probably re-blog some of my other posts along with my regular re-blogs of my followed favourites, and Game Six of the MLB World Series is tonight…I hope that Cleveland gives me something good to write about, LOL! I mistakenly thought that Game Five was going to be played in Cleveland; Chicago still had the home-field advantage, and finally capitalized on it quite well. I’m enjoying the series no matter who wins…but I’m still rooting for Cleveland! I have no money riding on the game, since I haven’t bet on a sporting event in 10 years. There are very few teams that I would bet any money on, since gambling isn’t really my thing. Poker once in a while; Powerball when the jackpot is insanely huge, but that’s about it.

Time to throw together some semblance of a novel cover to put on my NaNo page! I’ll catch up with your blogs later on this evening. See you all later!

Epically Awesome!!!

Well, will you look at this – my 5th award nomination! It appears as if the rules are straightforward:

1. I know you are Awesome, tell us why.

I get to toot my own horn for a change? I’m not used to it, but I’ll keep it short and sweet! I’m awesome because I’m me! I’m smart, funny, kinda cute, brutally honest, loyal to a fault, short-tempered but never cruel, and I tend to treat others the way I want to be treated: be respectful if you want to get to know me, don’t kiss my arse or blow smoke up my tail-pipe, and leave me alone if you don’t care for my personality…you can be certain that I will do the same, with no malice or anger – life is life, after all!

I’m a geek and a ‘blerd’ who has done a lot in life in a short time, so I’m writing about what I’ve done…my book is my memoirs to date. I love to read, travel, and listen to music…but I’m also a hermit who likes to vegetate at home. I can be content not seeing other people for weeks on end – I like my own company.

2. You are my friends and tell us about others.

Oh, this list could be horrendously long if I allowed it to be, so I’ll pick the top blogs that I’ve been reading over the past couple of months. These blogs are awesome in their own rights, for various reasons, and perhaps my readers will see how eccentric and eclectic my tastes are and just accept it, the same way I accept the creativity and variety of the blogs I follow. We may not agree on every single thing, but wouldn’t life be boring if we did? With that…roll call!

3. I want all of those I nominated to be creative!

4. I give no questions to be fully answered.

I’m working on part three of my current bit of ESO fan-fiction, which will be posted as soon as I find some epically awesome screen-shots to add. I’m also working on the live game-streaming content, so stay tuned for some epically awesome fighting…I really hope that they turn out well!

When in doubt, remember this…the answer to everything is ’42!’

Happy Friday…13th November 2015!!!

I see what day it is…so, here are 13 random songs for this final 13th Friday of the year! Enjoy…

November Is National Diabetes Awareness Month

My mother and my younger brother both have diabetes – my brother has renal issues because of it…November is National Diabetes Awareness Month.

American Diabetes Month takes place each November and is a time to come together as a community to Stop Diabetes.

American Diabetes Month

The vision of the American Diabetes Association is a life free of diabetes and all of its burdens. Raising awareness of this ever-growing disease is one of the main efforts behind the mission of the Association. American Diabetes Month® (ADM) is an important element in this effort, with programs designed to focus the nation’s attention on the issues surrounding diabetes and the many people who are impacted by the disease.

Here are just a few of the recent statistics on diabetes:

  • Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes.
  • Another 86 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
  • The American Diabetes Association estimates that the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes in…

Scenic Serenity…

Yesterday, some deer graced us with their presence:

He stands at attention as his lady enters the scene…

…watching closely as she passes with dainty steps.

His eyes watch her every move…

…even when she disappears from sight.

Hmmm…where is she now?

Over there, perhaps?

Time to go looking…

…he knows she’s close!

Back over that-a-way…later!

Scenic Sadie Hawkins Saturday…

According to my trusty Simpsons calendar, today is “Sadie Hawkins Day” – which is about as official in the USA as Paul Bunyan’s birthday! From Wikipedia:

An American folk event, Sadie Hawkins Day is a pseudo-holiday that originated in Al Capp’s classic hillbilly comic strip, Li’l Abner (1934–1978). This inspired real-world Sadie Hawkins dances, where girls ask boys out.

Original story

In Li’l Abner, Sadie Hawkins was the daughter of one of Dogpatch’s earliest settlers, Hekzebiah Hawkins. The “homeliest gal in all them hills”, she grew frantic waiting for suitors to come a-courtin’. When she reached the age of 35, still a spinster, her father was even more frantic—about Sadie living at home for the rest of her life. In desperation, he called together all the unmarried men of Dogpatch and declared it “Sadie Hawkins Day”. A foot race was decreed, with Sadie in hot pursuit of the town’s eligible bachelors. She specifically had her eye on a boy who was already in a courtship with the cute farmers daughter, Theresa. She was the daughter of the area’s largest potato farmer, Bill Richmand, and, unlike Sadie, had a lot of courtship offers. Stud-muffin Adam Olis was her target, and because the engagement of Miss Theresa and Adam wasn’t official he was included in the race. With matrimony as the consequence of losing the foot race, the men of the town were running for their freedom. Turned out Adam Olis was in 4th place out of 10th leaving John Jonston Sadies’ catch of the day. It seems likely that the concept’s origins lie in an inversion of the myth of Atalanta, who, reluctant to marry, agreed to wed whoever could outrun her in a footrace.

“When ah fires [my gun], all o’ yo’ kin start a-runnin! When ah fires agin—after givin’ yo’ a fair start—Sadie starts a runnin’. Th’ one she ketches’ll be her husbin.”

The town spinsters decided that this was such a good idea, they made Sadie Hawkins Day a mandatory yearly event, much to the chagrin of Dogpatch bachelors. In the satirical spirit that drove the strip, many sequences revolved around the dreaded Sadie Hawkins Day race. If a woman caught a bachelor and dragged him, kicking and screaming, across the finish line before sundown—by law he had to marry her.

Sadie Hawkins Day was first mentioned in the November 15, 1937 Li’l Abner daily strip, with the race actually taking place between November 19 and November 30 in the continuity. It would prove to be a popular annual feature in Li’l Abner, and a cultural phenomenon outside the strip. (see Schreiner, Dave; “Sadie’s First Run”, Li’l Abner Dailies Volume 3: 1937, Kitchen Sink Press, Princeton, WI, pg. 8.)

I figured I’d open with that tidbit of good old-fashioned ‘murican lore, ROFL – ‘Sadie Hawkins Day’ was a nightmare for many of us during our “teens-ages!”

Anyway, this post was inspired by what I’ve viewed outside of my window since I woke up at 6:30 a.m. – I’ll post the best pictures that I’m able to cobble from my phone, tomorrow.

November is rutting season for the local deer population, and this year is the first year we have seen them so close to the house and can observe their behaviour. This will be our third winter in this location, and we have witnessed a treat that people usually only see when they are watching the now-misnamed Animal Planet channel: stags in rut and does in heat.

We counted three does – dainty ladies, high-stepping and prancing, butting and kicking each other as women are wont to do in the presence of a virile male. The king struts confidently, yet enslaved to the pheromones of the females…he trots with his antlered head low, mouth open and tongue hanging, tasting the scent of heat. He is a 5-point buck with a healthy coat and a thick neck – ghouls would call him a trophy; I see him as a perfect specimen who should breed long and well. He has most likely fathered the fawns we have seen since the first summer we moved in.

If the pictures I took do well, I will be pleased…but I am definitely going to upgrade my phone before the end of the month. I’m tired of not being able to take decent photographs, and the phone I’m getting will put my current camera to shame. Comparing 16 HD megapixels with phenomenal zoom capability, to 10 standard megapixels and only 3.6x zoom capability, is a no-brainer, to me! (…and, I hope that I used too many commas, there!)

‘Bambi’ was one of the first Walt Disney animated films that I saw, and I adored the soundtrack for it. Enjoy these select clips…my favourites from the movie.

F**K it Friday!!!

LOL – no, I’m not in a bad mood. A little snarky, feeling aggro and frustrated, perhaps, but not necessarily in a bad mood! Exasperatedly amused is another way to describe how I’m feeling, I suppose. What is causing this consternation? Simple: nobody knows how to socialize face-to-face anymore! I used to think that I was socially inept because I could read people TOO well and never played the ‘social butterfly’ at parties. I’m a very sensitive ISTP, meaning that I feel drained by people sometimes. My husband’s energy can be chaotic – mine can too, of course – but it grates on me when I’m trying to relax and focus.

Anyway, back to the topic: socializing. The way people socialize has (d)evolved dramatically with the age of the internet, and it appears I have to catch up with the times. Face-to-face interactions are now done on webcam, through mediums like Skype or Twitch. People ‘stream’ themselves into other’s homes, virtually. Mere conversations aren’t enough…the pressure to prove that one isn’t a robot or a bottom-feeding ‘catfish’ seems constant. At the same time, every so-called ‘social’ website seems to do little more than create drama and nonsense, especially among those whose need for attention drives them to interfere in the lives and relationships of others. People create phony online personas out of sheer boredom, not caring about whose lives they might turn upside-down.

I like my privacy and my ‘fortress of solitude’ – but, I also know that I have to be a little more open if I’m going to sell my books. I have to step outside of my walls and my comfort zone…and I hate it. I don’t want to, but I have to. Sometimes in life, we have to do the things we don’t like to get ahead and accomplish a life-long dream. I have to be seen, be known, and become familiar to others. I have to put in ‘face-time’ – and that really chafes my buttocks!

Time for a bit of honesty and levity from the past week. I watch The Daily Show, The Nightly Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and Conan O’Brien regularly – they are my main means of getting news and information without raging or weeping…a dose of comedy eases the bad taste of events around the world. Below are three great discussions – enjoy!

The Late Show: Stephen is a sexy teenaged vampire!

The Nightly Show: “Journalistic Jerking”

Today marks the 201st birth anniversary of Adolphe Sax…so, here are three songs that don’t have saxophones in them!
