Tragic, Senseless Losses…

I was planning to post my “Five for Friday” fun facts, but decided to put it off until next week. Two tragic, senseless events occurred this week, but there has been little reported about them. Most outlets, everywhere I look, are fawning over the Drumpf and how “presidential” he’s suddenly become because he knows how to launch missiles and drop bombs. That is supposed to be the last resort, when all other things have failed – but this jackass is determined to do anything to distract from the scandals and valid questions surrounding his administration, and it appears to be working.

The two events I’m referring to are, first, the shooting in San Bernardino. Karen Smith, a teacher, was shot and killed by her estranged husband on Monday, 10 April. One of her students, 8-year-old Jonathan Martinez, also died after being caught in the crossfire; another student, aged nine, was wounded. Karen hadn’t been married to her husband very long, and it was apparently troubled. She was staying at the homes of relatives in order to hide from him, yet he showed up at her place of employment – a school – and took her life, then his own. From NBC News:

Out of fear of her estranged husband, Karen Smith began staying at the homes of relatives in order to hide from him, family sources told NBC 4 Los Angeles. Adam Smith said her death came as a surprise, and that his mother and her husband had problems but he never imagined Anderson was capable of this.

The four adult children declined to discuss Karen Smith’s relationship with Anderson further, but they opened up about their mother’s love for her work. Karen Smith, a grandmother of three, home-schooled her children for eight years before she pursued her career as a special education teacher. As both mother and educator, she formed a tight-knit bond with her children.

“Personally, she was my rock, my best friend and my world,” Jennifer Smith, Karen Smith’s daughter, said. Jennifer Smith, who became a teacher like her mother, said Karen Smith’s impact last long after her students left her classroom. “Oftentimes former students would contact her and thank her for helping them graduate from high school,” Jennifer said. “Children were the light of her world and their success was hers.”

Adam Smith agreed, saying that during his mother’s 10-year career, she enjoyed seeing her students succeed and excel in their work. After their mother’s death on Monday, Karen Smith’s children were still reeling from the loss. “She didn’t deserve to die like this,” Adam Smith said, his voice catching.”

The sickness and evil of people like Cedric Anderson cannot be overstated enough. Psychos and sociopaths, for whatever reason, become obsessed with the person they feel has “wronged” them. Their desperate attention-seeking becomes more and more dangerous, to the point of stalking, baiting, bullying, and other types of harassment. They can’t accept it when another doesn’t want them in their lives, and take the rejection so personally that they blame the other person instead of looking at themselves to see where the issue lies. Everything is the fault of someone else, in their twisted, broken little minds.

The loss of a caring, loving teacher is such a shame, as is the death of a young boy who had his whole life ahead of him. Two lives tragically cut short, because some damaged-beyond-repair cretin couldn’t handle the fact that his marriage was over, and his actions were the cause of it. Domestic violence affects many, and the most dangerous time for a person escaping an abusive relationship is when they’ve physically left it; this shooting shows that fact in a glaring light.

Sheila Abdus-Salaam: 14 March 1952 – 12 April 2017

The second event is the mysterious death of Sheila Abdus-Salaam, the first African-American woman, and the first Muslim, to serve on New York’s highest court. Her fully-clothed body was pulled out of the Hudson River on Wednesday, 12 April, a day after she was reported missing. No cause of death has been announced, and the results of an autopsy conducted yesterday were inconclusive, but her death is being treated as a suicide – and that irks me to no end. From Al-Jazeera:

Tributes were paid on Thursday to Sheila Abdus-Salaam, the first African-American woman to serve on New York’s highest court. Police pulled Abdus-Salaam’s fully clothed body from the Hudson River on Wednesday, a day after she was reported missing. The 65-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. No cause of death has been announced.

There were no signs a crime had been committed in her death, a police spokesman said on Thursday. Law enforcement officials speaking on condition of anonymity told US media that investigators were treating the death as a suicide. One of the officials said both the judge’s mother and brother had died in recent years around Easter, the brother by suicide.

Results of an autopsy conducted on Thursday were inconclusive. “The cause and manner of death are pending further studies following today’s examination,” Julie Bolcer, a spokeswoman for the city’s medical examiner, said in a statement. Abdus-Salaam was widely reported to have been the country’s first female Muslim judge. Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo hailed Abdus-Salaam as “a trailblazing jurist whose life in public service was in pursuit of a more fair and more just New York for all”.

“As the first African-American woman to be appointed to the state’s Court of Appeals, she was a pioneer,” Cuomo said. “Through her writings, her wisdom and her unshakable moral compass, she was a force for good whose legacy will be felt for years to come.”

Chief Judge Janet DiFiore said her colleague will be “missed deeply”. “Her personal warmth, uncompromising sense of fairness and bright legal mind were an inspiration to all of us who had the good fortune to know her,” DiFiore said. Nihad Awad, national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said her example and work on civil rights issues were inspiring to women, Muslims, and African Americans. “Her story was a story of success, empowerment and inspiration,” he said.

The president of the New York State Bar Association, Claire P Gutekunst, noted Abdus-Salaam grew up poor in a family of seven children in Washington, DC, and “rose to become one of the seven judges in New York’s highest court, where her intellect, judicial temperament and wisdom earned her wide respect”.

Abdus-Salaam graduated from Barnard College and received her law degree from Columbia Law School. She became a public defender in Brooklyn after law school, the New York Times said, representing people who could not afford lawyers. She went on to serve as a lawyer for New York state government and city’s office of labour services. In one of her first cases, she won an anti-discrimination suit for more than 30 female New York City bus drivers who had been denied promotions.”

Is it possible that she committed suicide? Sure. Do I believe that it was a suicide? Not really. It’s difficult for me to believe that, especially in light of this recent assault on another Muslim woman, which happened on Monday in Milwaukee. From the Huffington Post:

Police are investigating the vicious assault Monday of a Muslim woman in Milwaukee in what the local community is calling a hate crime. The 58-year-old woman, who does not want to be identified, told Fox6Now a man armed with a knife attacked her while she was walking home from her mosque early Monday. She said a car pulled up alongside her and he hopped out, demanding that she remove her hijab. “I tried to fight him,” she told the local news channel. “‘Don’t take my hijab,’ you know? So he threw me on the floor then he beat me like an animal.”

“Before he hurt me, I said ‘today I gonna die,” she recounted to WISN. “I gonna die.’” The council of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, where the woman attends mosque, described the assault in a letter to its members this week: He then grabbed her head and removed her hijab and began to attack her. She is a petite woman in her late 50s. She tried to resist. Her nose began to bleed from the hits she suffered. Besides punching and kicking our sister in the head and back while she was on the ground, he also had a knife. The jacket she was wearing has a long vertical cut in the back and also a cut on the arm of the jacket. Our sister suffered a cut on her arm that, alhamdulillah [praise God], was not serious. As expected, she was terrified. The attacker did not ask for money nor did he take her phone. The attacker then returned to his car and sped off.

The woman managed to walk home, where she then suffered a seizure, her lawyer, Munjed Ahmad, told The Huffington Post. Ahmad said the woman is epileptic and the attack likely induced the seizure. A friend later arrived at the woman’s home and called 911. She was transported to a local hospital where she was sedated and released the following day. Ahmad told HuffPost the woman suffered a bloody nose, a laceration on her arm, a bloodied face, a black eye, and bruising on her face. Her hijab and a copy of the Quran she was carrying were both bloodied during the attack.”

This is just one of many hate-driven assaults perpetrated upon Muslim people. The ignorant, racist hate-mongers out there think that anyone wearing a head-covering, such as the turbans worn by Sikhs, are Muslim. A Sikh gentleman was shot in his own driveway here in Washington state, in the city of Kent, back at the beginning of March. Attacks such as these are just the tip of the iceberg, unfortunately. Denying the amount of vitriol and hate that has surfaced since the selection of the Drumpf is being blindly, willfully ignorant – and in some ways, being so is the worst crime of all. Unfortunately, Sheila Abdus-Salaam might not get the due justice deserved, even though she did much good for a lot of people. It’s entirely possible that her religion and her career made her a target for multiple reasons, and a crime of opportunity can look like a suicide if it isn’t investigated thoroughly. The fact that her death has barely made a ripple on the news or across the interwebs shows how little people care about the death of Black people in general, and Black women in particular…and that’s a shame.

3 Saturday Songs…

Just some songs for Saturday…these are where my thoughts turn when I hear some ignorant asshole saying “take my country back” and “make America great again” – these and other travesties are what they seem to desire.

Meanwhile, I’m going to catch up on reading some blogs…and, I was just nominated for another award! I’ll be busy for a few hours – see you all later!

Free-running Thoughts…

My thoughts have been all over the place due to recent events in the country, so I’m just going to let them roam as they may.

First off, my thoughts are on the tragedy involving Kansas City linebacker, Javon Belcher. He engaged in the graphic, public murder of his girlfriend, who was also the mother of his 3-month-old child. Then, he committed suicide in the parking lot of the stadium, in front of the general manager and the coach. I’m saddened that a child has been stripped of her parents. It’s tragic that a talented young man felt the need to take two lives, giving no thought to the effects that would have on the new life that they (may have) created together. Let’s be honest about that, at least; we know that there are women who claim false paternity – and no, that’s no excuse either, money can punish parasitic people in the courts! Domestic violence is a beast. Men who kill in this manner are certainly suffering from a major mental malfunction, there’s no denying that. But I get annoyed at the ghoulish ‘friends’ who come out of the wood-work after the fact, claiming that they “always knew that something was wrong.” They probably couldn’t have prevented the murder, but do they need to make money by selling an embellished story to the highest bidder? My so-called friends would never listen to me when I was in an abusive relationship long ago; they knew the asshole was cheating on me, yet did nothing but ASSume that I already knew! People aren’t always as well-meaning as they claim to be, and those who are quick to shove in front of a camera following a tragic event like this are narcissist ghouls riding the bloody coattails for some sort of notoriety – it’s sickening.

This incident reminds me of a similar one years ago, but the other incident is worse in a way. It involved a police chief in Tacoma, Washington, David Brame, who did a similar thing on April 26, 2003. He killed his estranged wife and then himself after meeting her in a public area to transfer their children, as they had a custody and visitation order in place. Their two children were ages 8 and 5 at the time. You can bet that they vividly recall what their father did! Why did the pre-employment psych screen not eject him from police work? How is it that many people were aware of his mental instability, yet covered up his madness so he could have a meteoric rise to the top of the cop shit-hill? There were many red flags in his screening, yet he was a shoo-in. A person who is supposedly going to ‘protect and serve’ should be of sound mental faculties, no? The facts are otherwise, unfortunately – that organization was never really formed to ‘protect and serve’…

I mention this because, sadly, there are too many brothers and sisters out there who are needlessly suffering from depression and anxiety. Untreated, these disorders lead to paranoia, isolation, and self-destruction – they also instigate debilitating physical effects; high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, and addictions can be directly linked to untreated anxiety or depression. My series on mental illnesses is trying to separate the real maladies that many suffer, from the ones that have been created and invented to benefit a select few. I’m changing up the order of subsequent topics on that, so bear with me!

Last week marked the birth anniversary of Jimi Hendrix, and the birthday of the phenomenal, incomparable Tina Turner – both are fantastic musicians and I’m pleased to have a number of their albums in my massive music collection! True talent, there. Sad that Jimi left this world far too soon…he would have been 70.

I was laughing hard at the trailers for Red Dawn, a movie that was B-grade at best, when it first came out in the 1980s, but the remake is positively laughable – as are most though, so it’s not like I expect much from it. Hell, I’m not even going to watch it, it just strikes me funny that there is so little talent in Hollywood – nothing but re-hashed, regurgitated slop left and right. I’d recommend people watch the original; that way you can see the awesome anti-Russian propaganda of the times at its paranoid best! I’m thinking that Willard Romney was watching it with Paul Ryan before their respective debates in a pathetic attempt to brush up of foreign policy! Mmmmmm…makes me want to go guzzle some fresh deer blood, LMFAO

The trailers for The Hobbit look decent – we’ll see if they can do the book justice. Speaking of books, we’ll see how well MY books do, as none of them have protagonists of the caucasian persuasion! I’m not a white person pretending to be a PoC, so I haven’t been able to get proper publicity for it as others seem to be able to do…still, I will persevere – it’s what I do best! Sad that even the top Black producers refuse to promote other Black people – they’re far too invested to investing in and promoting whites. Go figure…

I saw a guest post on another blog, recently, which discussed makeup and beauty products. The main focus was on Fashion Fair, the beauty line for Black women. I used to buy it at the Bon Marche department store in Seattle, as well as Nordstrom’s. Nordstrom’s stopped carrying it, and the Bon Marche was taken over by Macy’s, which immediately stopped selling it as well – Clinique seemed to have taken over overnight, and I was not impressed with the products I saw, nor did the so-called ‘beauty consultants’ fill me with any confidence. Those pasty bitches were rude if they deigned to speak to me at all – customer service was non-existent. Completely unlike the women at the Fashion Fair counter, who were quite friendly and helpful; and, best of all, they knew my skin and undertones! They didn’t have to guess at a shade, they picked out a perfect color and within a half-hour had given me three wonderful palettes to work with. I was disappointed when I couldn’t get my favorite skin-care line over the counter anymore, so I resorted to what I did in Alaska: mail-order. I called and requested a catalogue so I could continue to support a company that I really believed in.

I discovered their website and have bookmarked it, but am sad to see that many of the things I used to buy have been discontinued – the oil-free liquid foundation, for one, is no longer carried in my shade (Bare Bronze). The souffle foundation is in my shade (Bronze), but I never liked the way it felt on my skin. I see that they have a new ‘liquid mineral’ foundation; I wonder how it will compare to the beauty line I currently use? I don’t even know which shade to use –  Powerful Bronze, Honest Chocolate, or Enduring Ebony? I’ll have to buy all three, it would seem. I’m going to do a product comparison and blog the results as I go, so stay tuned if you’re interested in me talking about girly-girl shit once in a while. Hey, I never said that I wasn’t vain! I’m just not overtly so…at least, I try not to be. I wasn’t encouraged to indulge in shallow behaviours in my youth! I see what people turn into when shit like that is valued, and want no part of it.

Time to play Skyrim! Yes, I still play on a daily basis – and we finally got the ‘Dawnguard’ expansion, as well as a fun little one called ‘Hearthfire’, which allows you to build your own manor and furnish it as you see fit. It’s the perfect land-steading, befitting a Thane of the realm! I’ll post some new pics soon; got my PhotoBucket crap finally sorted out.

Talkin’ Sports: Wow…

CORRECTED ON 01 JUNE 2012 – APOLOGIES FOR MY ERRORS!!!

I’ve been meaning to comment on this story since it broke last week, especially after the ‘Metta World Peace’ incident occurred and was summarily shoved aside – I guess he was only suspended for 7 games, and I have yet to find out if he had any fines levied or if there will be any charges filed…anyway, I enjoy watching a hockey game here and there (go Winterhawks!) and have sorta-kinda followed the Stanley Cup playoffs for a couple of years now.  At any rate, the Washington Capitals won a crucial playoff game, thanks in part to the winning goal being scored by Joel Ward – who just happens to be one of the few black men playing professional hockey.  Much like Yao Ming and Jeremy Lin, among others,  stand out to many as anomalies in basketball, so, too, do people like Joel Ward, and Wayne Simmonds of the Philadelphia Flyers, stand out like sore thumbs to the racist assholes who still feel that sports should be whites-only bastions.  Ever since Jesse Owens destroyed the myth of Hitler’s Ubermenschen in those long-ago Olympic Games, there has been a group of cretins who still tout the nonsensical message of people being ‘superior’ for nothing but the hue of their skin – which, incidentally, they had no control over, and I was always taught that what you accomplish in life is what makes you a better person, not something incidental like your looks.

Digressing!  Here’s an article about the filth spewed at Joel Ward after his game-winning goal:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1162330-nhl-playoffs-2012-how-fans-should-deal-with-racism-in-hockey

I recall the news report about the banana being thrown at Wayne Simmonds as well – no matter how successful black people get, there’s always some low-life loser who feels the need to try to tear that person down, minimize their accomplishments, and simply not give credit where it’s due.  Reminds me of the FauxNews douchebags raking the President over the coals and screeching that he is “taking sole credit” for taking down Osama bin Laden…but, that’s a topic for another day – this is sports talk, after all!

R.I.P., Junior Seau

Former San Diego Chargers linebacker, Junior Seau, was recently found dead in his California home – suicide is suspected.  His girlfriend found him and called the authorites.  His mother is devasted, as can be expected…my heart went out to her as she grieved during the press conference.  No parent should have to lose their child no matter how old that ‘child’ is…

http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/04/sport/nfl-seau-autopsy/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

I vaguely recall the 2010 incident the article refers to, where Seau apparently drove his car off of a cliffside after a suspected domestic violence incident.  Gives me flashbacks of Mike Tyson with his car wrapped around a tree – he did a similar thing when his marriage to Robin Givens hit the skids.  I don’t think it can be denied that boxers and football players, who get struck in the head far more often than in other sports, tend to have issues with impulsivity – just look at the actions of people such as Ben Roethlisberger and Brett Favre, or the known steroid-pumpers Brian Bosworth (Seattle Seahawks), and Lyle Alzado (R.I.P. – Denver Broncos, L.A. Raiders; died at the age of 43).  Now there’s a story on CNN (Castrated/Censored Non-News) which is stating that over 100 former NFL players are suing the organization for concussions – a day after four players from various teams have been suspended over the ‘Saints Bounty’ scandal…craziness.

Finally, it’s baseball season again….the ‘Boys of Summer’ are back!  My Seattle Mariners are…well, being the Seattle Mariners!  🙂  They are in danger swept by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, if they don’t win today’s game.  Last night they had a 3-0 lead, but a 2-run homer by Sean Rodriguez, as well as a home-run hit by Luke Scott that was almost caught by Michael Saunders – the ball bounced off of his mitt and over the wall – the score became a 4-4 tie.  The Rays eventually took the lead and remained there until the end of the game.  Justin Smoak ALMOST won the game in the 9th inning; he hit a beaut out to far right field, just on the good side of the foul line…and it was caught by Ben Zobrist at the right field corner.  Not to mention, there was some asshole Tampa Bay fan sitting in one of the seats behind the batter’s box.  He’s the type who was yelling, “Hey, batterbatterbatterbatterbatter….Suh-WING BATTER!!!!” to muck up the timing of the man at-bat.  DAMNIT!!  Oh well, it’s a good thing I rarely bet on sports!  😎
