You always find wonderful quotes, but this one really speaks to me. I’ve always had a thing about the forest. Even as a child, when our extended family would make its annual trip to a lake in Arkansas (I don’t even remember the name of the lake at the moment, I just remember going), while all my cousins were playing in the water and the adults were drinking beer around the campfire, I would make a beeline for an extensive nature trail built by Boy Scouts years ago. I would walk that trail through the thick forest for hours, every day, until it was time to go back home…

I always need to be near nature, even when I was locked in the middle of a city – water and trees; sea and mountains…I always need to be near them. That’s one reason I’m glad to have lived in Alaska – it helped me love and appreciate the wild all the more.

It sounds like you did the same thing as I, as children…out camping, others gathered around the fire, but I would just wander off and look at moss, fungi, trees, and running water. Listening to the sounds of everything, and looking for the animals. It’s great fun, for me. Every child should spend time in the wilderness, as early as possible!
